Information Technology Resources

We have a modern computer laboratory in the Agribusiness Centre that is available for casual use when it is not being used for teaching. It comprises 20 personal computers running Windows and connected to the local area network (LAN). There are also 4 computers for student use in the Library. To use these computers, students require a user account for the LAN. Application forms for a user account are available from Reception.

During semester, the Computer Laboratory is open from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm. Access after 5:00 pm depends on students not abusing the privilege by misusing the equipment, vandalism, theft or leaving the room untidy. Weekend and public holiday access is by arrangement and also depends on students not abusing the privilege.

Software includes Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and other agricultural and accounting related applications. All software held by the campus is subject to copyright laws.

Students are able to save documents and other files to their own personal share (directory) on the LAN server. Files saved on the LAN are backed up each weeknight (except Public Holidays). This is not a guarantee against loss of data and the College will not accept responsibility for any such loss. Students are therefore advised to keep a back up copy of their important documents and files on suitable media such as memory sticks.

The internet can be accessed from any computer on the LAN and internet use is restricted to study related purposes. Similarly, use of the College email account created for each student should be confined to study related purposes.

All students have a weekly internet download limit that applies for websites external to the College. If you access a lot of external websites, you may rapidly use up your download quota. Please note that your internet quota is not time-based. It is a measure of all the information from external sites (text, images, video, files, etc) that is displayed on a screen, played on a computer or downloaded to a computer. The weekly internet download limit is 50Mb. Once this limit is reached, your access to the internet and email will be blocked.

There is a black and white laser printer in the Computer Laboratory that every computer will print to by default. There is a colour laser printer in the Library. Printing is logged and charged at 15 cents per A4 side for black and white and 60 cents per A4 side for colour. This charge is made at the end of each term.

Students can minimise their printing cost and help the environment by limiting their printing. For example, editing documents on screen rather than printing the documents for correction will not only save money it will also help the environment by saving paper. Please note that all waste paper must be placed in recycling bins.

Computer Viruses

In a shared computing environment, there is always the chance that computer viruses may be present. To minimise the chance of infection and transmissions, files to be copied onto College computers should be checked for viruses using the anti-virus software installed on every College computer.
