Alanna Hansford: A Rising Leader in Australian Agriculture

At just 21 years old, Alanna Hansford is quickly establishing herself as a passionate and driven contributor to the future of Australian agriculture. Originally from the South West of Victoria, Alanna spent her formative years balancing life between her family’s large dairy farm near Cobden and the nearby township. This dual upbringing instilled in her a deep appreciation for rural life and sparked her enduring commitment to the agricultural sector.

Earlier this year, Alanna and her partner Ryan made a significant move to the Wimmera/Mallee region in North West Victoria, purchasing their first home and embracing the opportunities and challenges that come with living and working in one of Australia’s key agricultural zones.

Currently undertaking an Advanced Diploma of Agribusiness Management at Longerenong College, Alanna is focused on gaining practical, hands-on knowledge to enhance her work in agriculture. Her studies encompass crop and livestock management, soil health, sustainable farming practices, and the integration of modern technologies. As she puts it, “Studying at Longy is equipping me with the tools to make informed decisions, adapt to changing conditions, and prepare for future opportunities in the sector.”

Influences and Mentorship

Alanna credits a wide network of mentors and role models for shaping her journey. She is especially grateful to local farmers Jon and Brad, who have generously supported her studies by allowing her to conduct practical work on their properties. She also acknowledges the guidance of industry leaders and educators, with special mention to Gaye Cameron, a former teacher and long-time supporter, who encouraged her to apply for the prestigious Global Footprints Scholarship.

Achievements and Aspirations

Receiving the Global Footprints Scholarship stands out as one of Alanna’s proudest achievements. “It’s a dream come true,” she says. “This award allows me to travel globally, learn from innovative practices, and contribute to the future of sustainable agriculture.” Her excitement was palpable when she received the news—calling her mum, partner Ryan, and mentor Gaye to share the moment.

Looking ahead, Alanna is eager to continue expanding her knowledge and network. Over the next 12 months, she plans to attend agricultural conferences across Australia and potentially abroad, depending on the timing of her scholarship travel. She is particularly interested in further study in animal nutrition and agronomy, driven by her strong passion for livestock.

Advice and Reflections

Alanna is a vocal advocate for agricultural education and encourages others to take the leap. “Just go for it! Agriculture has opened so many doors for me, and I love seeing more people get involved,” she says. Her advice to other rural women—young or mature—is equally empowering: “Don’t let anyone discourage you. You’re more capable than you believe.”
