Russell Ford’s journey from a curious student at Longerenong College to a respected leader in agricultural research and consulting is a testament to the power of passion, education, and perseverance.

Originally from Jerilderie, NSW, Russell didn’t grow up on a farm, but his interest in agriculture was sparked by the unique blend of science and hands-on farming offered at Longerenong College. Between 1977 and 1980, he studied at Longerenong, drawn by the college’s practical approach and broad curriculum.

Russell’s time at Longerenong laid a strong foundation for a dynamic and impactful career. He credits the college for giving him practical experience across a wide range of agricultural enterprises, which proved invaluable as he navigated the industry. Since graduating, Russell has worn many hats—farmer, project manager, agronomy advisor, and now, Director of RLF Agro R&D Consulting, a self-employed venture that combines his expertise in farming, research, and agronomy.

His passion for rice has driven much of his work, and he continues to contribute meaningfully to the agricultural sector through innovation and strategic advice. Russell’s career reflects a deep commitment to improving farming practices and supporting sustainable agriculture.

To those considering Longerenong College, Russell offers simple but powerful advice: “Do it. This is an opportunity to learn a broad understanding of the agricultural arena.” For current students, he encourages them to embrace the vast opportunities available and to recognise the value of their education. And for graduates entering the workforce, he reassures them: “You are well regarded for a balanced background and a practical approach to farming.”

Though his connection with Longerenong College is somewhat active, Russell’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of agricultural professionals. His story is a shining example of how a solid educational foundation, combined with passion and hard work, can lead to a fulfilling and influential career.
